In this episode of The Sharpen Podcast, host Steve Van Diest sits down with Steve Donnigan, founder of A65 Consulting and a fellow member of the Acumen community, to talk about the eight-year journey of building a boutique contract engineering firm that helps medical device companies bring life-changing products to market. Together, they look back on the calculated leap out of a stable engineering job, the brutal test of losing major clients and income during 2020, and the slow, ongoing work of learning to trust God and trust a team rather than trying to do everything alone.

The conversation moves through the real tension points of growth — becoming the bottleneck as a solo contributor, building culture with a fully remote, contract-based engineering team, and raising kids who watched both the highs and the hard years up close. Steve gets candid about what trust actually looks like at four o'clock on a hard Thursday, not just when business is easy, and shares how a book on relaxing into God's sovereignty, a coaching relationship through Acumen, and a weekly accountability group keep him grounded as he looks toward the next chapter of growth.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why waiting for your first contract before quitting your day job can de-risk a launch without killing the dream
  • How a six-month contract can turn into a two-year runway — and what that teaches about provision and timing
  • Why losing your biggest clients and going six months without income can become a turning point rather than an ending
  • How to recognize when you've become the bottleneck in your own company, and what it actually takes to delegate
  • Why building culture with a fully remote, all-contractor team requires deliberate hiring for values, not just skill
  • How watching parents navigate financial hardship with honesty can shape how kids see risk, faith, and resilience
  • Why trusting God in business is a daily practice, not a one-time decision, especially when clients walk away

About the Guest

Practical Takeaways for CEOs and Leaders

  • Line up your first contract or client before you leave your current job — a calculated exit beats a leap of faith with no safety net.
  • If you're the only one who can do the work, you're not building a company — you're building a job. Start abstracting yourself from the delivery.
  • When a downturn hits, look backward before you panic forward. Past provision (financial, relational, or otherwise) is evidence you can lean on.
  • Build your team around fit and values first, skill second — you can teach skill, but culture problems compound.
  • Be transparent with your family about both the wins and the losses. Kids remember how you navigated the hard times, not how you celebrated the good ones.
  • Get outside accountability — a coach, a peer group, or a council — before you think you need it. It's easier to trust a process when someone else is also watching the mirror.
  • Trust is built by delegating and checking the work, not by controlling every detail yourself. Growth requires letting go of "nobody can do it like me."
