In this episode of The Sharpen Podcast, host Dan Cooper sits down with Blake Moroney, a multi-business owner who has spent his career deliberately choosing freedom and flexibility over aggressive scale. From a mowing business he started at 12, to a national car dealership, to real estate investing and brokerage alongside his wife Paige, Blake has built what he calls a "lifestyle business" — one designed around family, passion, and enough, rather than growth for growth's sake.

Together, they dig into how personal loss reshaped Blake's definition of "enough," why he's skeptical of private equity roll-ups buying up local family businesses, and how he and Paige navigate running multiple ventures together as husband and wife. Blake also opens up about the next phase of his journey: shifting from building businesses internally to acquiring local, family-owned companies with an eye toward preserving their legacy rather than flipping them for profit.

Practical Takeaways for CEOs and Leaders

  • Define "enough" in real numbers before you decide how hard to chase growth — most owners overestimate what they'll actually spend, especially in retirement.
  • Treat separate ventures as divisions of one company rather than juggling them as unrelated businesses — it can simplify decision-making and mental load.
  • Build in checkpoints (a new baby, a health scare, a loss) to reassess which parts of the business are worth the time they cost.
  • If you're a couple running a business together, deliberately build systems and role boundaries early — don't just offload what you don't enjoy onto your partner.
  • When considering an exit, look past the multiple: ask what the buyer's actual plan is for your employees, customers, and community.
  • If you're acquiring companies, target businesses with existing management layers so you're not forced back into day-to-day operations.
  • Turn personal passions (cars, real estate, etc.) into structured business lines rather than pure expenses — it can fund the lifestyle you actually want.
