We all strive to balance our personal and professional lives - but how much more challenging can that be when you're combatting the patterns modeled to you, when your business is growing by leaps and bounds, and when the joyfully chaotic life of a young family is complicated further by processes of adoption? What can it look like for balance and calm to prevail, even then? Steve Van Diest interviews Jonathan Hachmeister about his experience as the son of a founder, as the father of young children, and as the leader of a growing company in this episode of the Sharpen Podcast.

Episode Summary

0:07-3:04

Steve Van Diest introduces himself, Acumen, and his guest, Jonathan Hachmeister. Their primary topic for the day: addressing the complexities of business while being a whole person at home as well. Jonathan expands on his experience with Acumen, his busy life at home with young children, and his business in senior housing as the founder and managing partner of Stage Management. Steve reflects on his journey with Jonathan and asks Jonathan to dig into his experience as not only a business leader himself, but also the son of a business founder.

3:05-7:59

Jonathan's father started a construction company when he had a young family, and worked hard to build and maintain the business as the breadwinner. His father passed away from cancer in 2017, but Jonathan had the opportunity to work alongside him for years when he was brought in to run some real estate aspects of the company in 2008. This allowed him to explore and dive into senior housing, driving him to where he is today. His experience as the son of a founder gave him a unique perspective, opportunities, and of course some added pressure! Steve invites him to talk more about the responsibility of upholding his father's legacy while still being himself, and Jonathan agrees that it's a challenge while sharing how he's tried to remain focused on building a business well and through kingdom-minded practices. Jonathan has swung a pendulum between being the driven business owner his dad was while also working to be more present at home than his father was. That balance is a tricky one to find, and the legacy of a parent who approached it differently can complicate the process.

8:00-15:45

Steve asks: how do you process the risks and responsibilities of growing a company, with so much at stake, while still honoring and prioritizing those humans at home as well as taking care of yourself? Jonathan acknowledges that he is privileged to have his wife at home caring for the kids and being fully present with them, which allows them all to be fully together as a family when he is home. He has to make a conscious decision every day of when to flip on the business side or the family side, while also prioritizing his self-care and self-discipline through running and other avenues. Steve invites Jonathan to talk more about his youngest son, who they adopted after taking him in as a foster when he was only 9 months old. His bio parents actually actually invited Jonathan and his wife to adopt him, and the process recently finalized in February of 2024. Steve reflect on how Jonathan has a quiet, calm presence, which is incredible to see in action in the chaotic setting of young family life, especially with the lengthy adoption process on top of it all! He asks how Jonathan balances everything, and Jonathan points to his wife's social acumen and their church and family support. He loves watching his kids grow up with so many friends and having such active, loving lives.

15:46-19:14

Steve points again to how Jonathan balances family, personal well-being, and business leadership well, especially having been raised by a business leader from an era when this balance was not often honored. He asks Jonathan to speak to how relationships with his business partners have played into that balance. Jonathan talks about the two friends he has partnered with in his current role, who bring unique strengths and areas of expertise to the table. All of them have young families, so they are all working on that balance together! This means they've all agreed they don't want the business to grow too big, too quick, or too broad - at least for now. The personal and professional relationships between the three of them have been amazing.

19:15-21:11

Steve asks what their next challenge is? Jonathan says that it's to grow right - to follow growth opportunities to match up with their commitment to avoid overreaching and losing their balance between work and family. They hope to balance patience with urgency as they make wise decisions. Steve shares that he feels Jonathan is, somehow, all in for all the parts of his life.

21:12-21:37

Steve asks for Jonathan's contact information.
