Did you know that it’s halftime of 2022?
We had our quarterly strategy session last week before the holiday.
There have been years when we took a couple of hours and updated our plan for the 2nd half of the year. This year, we’ve planned for and have been experiencing aggressive growth (good problem) and decided to slow down and do a full strategic planning session.
Man, are we happy we did that!
Instead of checking our 2nd quarter goals and metrics, updating the numbers for the next 90 days, and moving on, we dug deep into where we are, how we got here and discussed plans that will make 2022 successful and roll into 2023 with momentum.
Our facilitator, Jim Canfield with CEO Tools, used an excellent analogy for mid-year.
Jim asked, “If you are playing a football game and it was halftime, what would you say to your team?“
Our team responded, “If we were losing or tied, we’d have a lot to say.”
“What about winning?” he asked.
“We’d have the same amount to say, but about different things.”
So why do we treat the mid-year point like a forgotten quarter?
July starts with a holiday. Then we go on vacation sometime during the month. Most of our clients are also on vacation. Our employees go on vacation, so our regular rhythm is interrupted because we’re always waiting on someone to come back.
Then, we show up in September after Labor Day and realize IT’S ALMOST 4TH QUARTER!! QUICK! KICK IT INTO HIGH GEAR!!
So I shouldn’t go on vacation?!?!
No, not what I’m saying.
You wouldn’t skip the locker room and go sit in your office during halftime waiting for the 4th quarter to rally your team. So, don’t do it at your company either.
Yes, take a break, but use this quarter wisely. Meet for your halftime strategy session, create a plan to win the 2nd half, and then hold your team accountable to your plan.
